NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Germany to continue strengthening its armed forces at a security conference in Berlin, DPA reported.

"Germany's decision to significantly increase its defense spending is historic with investments in new fighter jets, helicopters, ships and submarines," Stoltenberg said.

"This is really a 'zeitenwende' (from German Zeitenwende/turning point) that reflects our changed security environment," he said, referring to Russia's war on Ukraine.

"We need a strong and prepared Bundeswehr," added Stoltenberg, who also stressed the importance of Germany's defense industry.

"It is important for the security of Germany, it is important for the security of Europe and it is important for the security of the world."

NATO foreign ministers condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine and reaffirmed their support for Moldova

Turning his attention to Ukraine, Stoltenberg called for continued and increased support for it.

"We should not underestimate Russia. Russian missiles and drones continue to rain down on Ukrainian cities, civilians and critical infrastructure, causing enormous human suffering as winter sets in," the NATO Secretary General said.

Stoltenberg welcomed Germany's financial, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine and said it was being felt on the battlefield.

He reiterated his call for opposition to authoritarian regimes such as Russia.

"There can be no lasting peace if the aggressor wins, if oppression and autocracy defeat freedom and democracy. So the best way to support lasting peace is to support Ukraine," Stoltenberg said.

The dangerous dependence on Russian gas must also be taken into account in relations with China, the NATO Secretary General noted.

"We will, of course, continue to trade and interact economically with China, but we must be aware of our dependencies, reduce our vulnerability and manage our risks," Stoltenberg said.
