Mumbai :

Metropolitan Mumbai is facing an outbreak of measles.

So far 15 innocent lives have been lost due to this disease in the city, 86% of them were children below two years.

Adults are also coming in the grip of this infectious disease affecting children.

Pravesh Kumar, 19, works as a mechanic as well as studies.

About two weeks ago, he had come under the grip of Measles.

Now they have been able to recover.

Pravesh explains, “Two weeks ago, fever came and then a rash appeared on the body. Measles is showing its effect not only on children, but also on adults. Dr. Prajwal Shetty of BMC, explaining the cause of measles to adults, said, Those who have missed the measles vaccine in their childhood, now this disease is also affecting them in its spread.

But our main focus is on children in the age group of 0-5 years as they are at high risk.

Adults are getting well soon after getting measles, the problem is more in children.

Measles havoc on children: So far 15 children have died due to measles in Mumbai, out of which 5 children were less than one year old, while 8 children were between 1 and 2 years old and 2 children were aged between two and five years. 86% of the deaths were among children below the age of two years.

Among the children who died of measles, there were 9 boys and 6 girls.

By the way, measles has become a problem not only in the metropolitan city of Mumbai but also in Maharashtra.

There have been 717 cases of measles in Maharashtra, out of which maximum 43% cases are from Mumbai.

This year, 11,390 suspected cases of measles have been found in the state, whereas in 2019 this number was only 1337, that is, there has been an increase of about 700% in suspected cases this year.

Measles has spread in about 12 districts of the state.

Former Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday alleged that the Eknath Shinde-BJP government was not serious about tackling the measles outbreak.

Former minister Tope said, "The government is not doing enough. Healthcare is the prime responsibility of the government, it should wake up from its slumber. The government should set up a task force, speed up the vaccination program and spread awareness about measles. The education department should be included to work closely with the M.P. Measles is an infectious disease that spreads easily." All the family members are reaching the vaccination camps with their children who are yet to get measles vaccine.

95% vaccination is necessary for herd immunity against any disease.

It is an important challenge before the government-administration to reach this target at a speed because the lives of innocent people are in danger.
