"Fighting impunity for crimes committed in Ukraine after Russia's aggression is a priority for France.

We have mobilized forces in support of both the Ukrainian justice system and the International Criminal Court, which are competent to conduct impartial and independent investigations to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are brought to justice," the message reads.

The French Foreign Ministry quotes the words of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who a day earlier announced the proposal to create a special tribunal under the auspices of the UN to investigate and prosecute Russia's actions in Ukraine.

"We are ready to start working with the international community in order to garner maximum support for this specialized court," she said.

According to her, Russia must pay "for its terrible crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state."

The permanent representative of Russia at the Geneva headquarters of the UN, Gennady Gatilov, said that the creation of any mechanism, especially an international tribunal under the auspices of the UN, requires a sanction from the UN Security Council.

"It should be understood that the Council's decision on this issue is unlikely to be adopted," he said.
