Nearly half of Ukraine's power grid is down today, a week after the latest Russian strikes against the energy infrastructure.

This was reported by the private operator DTEK, but emphasized that electricians are working "round the clock" to repair them, BTA reported, citing France Press.

"Russia destroyed 40 percent of the Ukrainian energy system with terrorist missile attacks. Dozens of energy workers were killed and injured," DTEK said in Telegram.

Following defeats by Ukrainian troops on the ground, Russia began shelling energy facilities in Ukraine in October, causing massive damage and severe daily power shortages for millions of Ukrainians.

On November 24, the last massive strikes on such objects left whole regions without light and heat, including the capital Kyiv.

New attacks of this kind could significantly complicate the energy situation and trigger another refugee crisis in the middle of winter.

In order to have at least some light and heat during power outages, Ukrainians are forced to resort to alternative solutions, such as candles and generators, which sometimes lead to deadly fires.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian rescuers announced that they had registered the previous day 9 dead and 8 injured in similar fires in residential buildings.
