Iranian security forces shot dead a demonstrator celebrating the elimination of the country's national team from the World Cup in Qatar, BTA reported.

Last night, Iran lost to the USA 0-1 in their last match of the group stage of the tournament.

A draw was enough for the team to advance.

Activists said Mehran Samak was shot in the head while honking his car horn yesterday evening in the northern Iranian city of Bandar Azali on the Caspian Sea.

Over 300 people have died in the unrest in Iran

Videos posted on social media showed crowds celebrating the national team's elimination from the World Cup and elsewhere in Iran.

The people are clearly anti-government demonstrators, cheering and dancing.

Many Iranians did not support their country's national team at the World Cup, arguing that it represented the Islamic Republic.

State media accused "hostile forces" inside and outside Iran of unfairly pressuring the players of the national team, which had a real chance of qualifying for the last 16 after beating Wales 2-0 in its second group stage match.

The Islamic Republic has been gripped by 10 weeks of unrest since the death of 22-year-old ethnic Kurd Mahsa Amini after she was detained by morality police in the capital Tehran for improperly wearing a hijab.

According to human rights activists, since the beginning of the protests, at least 448 people have been killed, including 60 children, and more than 18,000 people have been detained.

France's ambassador to Iran, Nicolas Roche, meanwhile, was summoned to the foreign ministry today after the French National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution "in support of the Iranian people" on Monday.

At the meeting, Iran "strongly protested against the baseless accusations" of the French authorities and condemned the "unacceptable interference of this country".
