Although pulao is made by mixing many types of vegetables, but tomato pulao is the shortest recipe.

For this you do not even need many ingredients.

So without any delay let us tell you the easy recipe of Tomato Pulav. 

Tomato Pulav Ingredients-

  • 1 cup basmati rice

  • 2 medium onions

  • 2 tsp sambar powder

  • 1 handful coriander leaves

  • 2 tbsp refined oil

  • 1/2 tsp garlic paste

  • 4 large tomatoes

  • 3 medium green chilies

  • 1/4 tsp turmeric

  • salt as needed

  • 1/2 tsp ginger paste

  • 2 pinch red chili powder

  • for seasoning

  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds

  • 7 curry leaves

  • 1 pinch asafoetida

  • 2 red chilies

How to make Tomato Pulao- How To Make Tomato Pulao Recipe:

Step 1 Soak the rice

Wash and take out the basmati rice and soak it for about 20 minutes.

Take a deep pan, put it on medium heat and add water to it.

Let it boil and then add soaked rice.

Cover the pan with a lid and cook on medium heat till the rice becomes soft. Now take it off the gas and keep it aside for later use.

Step 2 - Prepare tomato puree and fry onions and spices

Now put the chopped tomatoes in the blender and blend it well.

Take out the puree in a bowl and keep it aside.

Now heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and add tempering ingredients (mustard, asafoetida, curry leaves, dry red chillies) to it.

Add onions and fry till light pink in colour.

Then add green chillies and ginger-garlic paste.

Fry these ingredients for a minute or two.

Step 3- Add tomato puree and rice

Now add tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, sambar powder and salt as required.

Fry till the oil separates from the spices.

Add cooked rice to tomato gravy and mix well.

When they are cooked, put this rice in a serving bowl and garnish with chopped coriander.

Serve hot with papad, potato chips or raita.

Tips for making delicious Tomato Rice

1. This dish is usually pungent in taste, so add less ginger and chilli to make it less pungent.

 2. Tomato Rice tastes best when served with Boondi Raita.

 3. Adding rice to tomato mixture before adding water enhances the taste of the dish.

Special Tips-

  • You can add whole spices by roasting or grinding them to enhance the taste of this dish.

  • You can also use coconut oil to make tomato rice.

  • For the best taste, you can think of making tomato puree at home from fresh tomatoes.
