The European Commission announced today that it is taking two criminal proceedings against Bulgaria related to road safety rules.

The Commission sends letters of notification, as this is the first step in opening the procedures.

In a message from the EC, it is noted that our country has not submitted data on how it applies the European rules, which came into force last year, for the technical requirements of roadside inspections of vehicles.

The new rules widen the range of vehicle types subject to these checks to include, for example, high-speed tractors.

The Commission is today sending letters of formal notice on this matter to a total of 13 countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Austria, Poland and Finland.

It is specified that the deadline for the introduction of the changes expired on September 27.

The Commission is also taking criminal proceedings against our country, Belgium, Ireland, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Finland, because by the same date they have not communicated how they apply the new rules for the annual roadworthiness tests of motor vehicles.

The rules, which came into force a year ago, include a change in the designations of certain types of vehicles (high-speed tractors, as well as two-, three- and four-wheel motor vehicles).

The changes introduce the eCall system, which sends automated messages to emergency services in the event of an accident.

The European legislation provides for the operation of this new system to be checked during the annual technical inspections of the vehicles, the announcement adds.
