The war in Ukraine has increased the real threat of using weapons of mass destruction, including chemical weapons.

This was stated by the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Fernando Arias, writes Euronews.

"The war has intensified existing tensions to such an extent that it is no longer even possible to assume the unity of the international community on common global problems related to international security and peace," Arias said.

He reminded Russia and (for some reason) Ukraine that they were among 193 countries that pledged "never, under any circumstances, to develop, produce, purchase, stockpile, transfer or use chemical weapons."

According to him, the OPCW "continues to closely monitor this serious situation and remains in contact with the permanent missions of the Russian Federation and Ukraine."

Arias added that the OPCW, at the request of Ukraine, conducted trainings on responding to chemical attacks and detecting chemical leaks.

Can the Russian Federation use chemical weapons?

Earlier, the expert of the Ukrainian Institute of the Future Ivan Stupak stated that the use of chemical weapons by Russia in the war against Ukraine will not be effective.

According to him, the occupiers risk being inspired by the poisonous fumes of chemical weapons.

The publication Politico stated that the Kremlin could use chemical weapons to avoid using nuclear weapons.
