The new book launch was held in the Shanshang Garden Waterway Museum. The Cultural Affairs Bureau invited all walks of life in the local area to participate and learn about the history of the development of people's livelihood over the past century.

Chen Xiucheng, deputy director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, said that hundreds of years ago, Tainan was suffering from various infectious diseases. After the construction of waterways by engineer Yashiro Hamano, clean drinking water entered the households, which contributed greatly to the improvement of public health.

Chen Xiucheng said that the content of the picture book is to tell everyone how Yashiro Hamano did it. It describes the arduous planning process of this engineer at the Civil Engineering Bureau of the Taiwan Governor-General's Mansion during the Japanese occupation period. After overcoming various difficulties one after another, he finally completed the project in 1922.

Chen Xiucheng pointed out that during the 24 years from 1896 to 1919, Yashiro Hamano went back and forth between the north and the south of Taiwan to carry out the survey, design and construction of water supply projects, laying a long-term foundation for a modern city.

The Tainan waterway is currently the most well-preserved waterway facility in China. It was designated as a national monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2005. After restoration, it is now operated by the city government as a unique museum.

The picture book "Urban Water Doctor: The Story of Yashiro Hamano and Tainan Waterways" was officially published, and it is sold in major online bookstores and physical bookstores. The Cultural Affairs Bureau recommends that parents and children buy and read it.
