Britain's Prince William and the Princess of Wales will try to draw attention to the Earthshot prize for environmental innovators when they make their first visit to the US in eight years this week - a trip marred by tensions between the heir to the throne and his brother Prince Harry

William and his wife Catherine will travel to Boston on Wednesday for three days of public engagements before announcing the award winners on Friday at a ceremony headlined by pop star Billie Eilish.

Kennedy, was chosen to host the second annual award ceremony because of the late president's 1962 speech, titled "We Choose to Go to the Moon," which challenged Americans to reach the natural satellite. on Earth by the end of the decade, inspired the prince and his partners to set a similar goal of finding solutions to climate change and other environmental problems by 2030.

The first Earthshot Awards were presented last year in London, just before the UK hosted the COP26 climate conference.

But as much as the royals try to focus on the prize, William is likely to face questions about Harry and Meghan, who have criticized the royal family for racism and insensitivity in interviews with Oprah Winfrey and other US media. 

The Netflix series "The Crown" has also resurrected some of the darkest times for the Windsor dynasty, as the royal family tries to show it remains relevant in modern, multicultural Britain after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

"It's safe to say that the royal family, especially as far as America is concerned, has not had it easy lately," said Jo Little, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine.

"They've come under a lot of criticism because of The Crown and the Oprah Winfrey interview, which didn't reflect well on the Windsor dynasty. I think it's a good opportunity while they're in the U.S. to redress the balance, if at all possible." . 

Whatever those efforts are, they will be made in and around Boston, where William and Kate will stay for the duration of their visit. 

The royal couple will keep their focus on environmental issues, meeting with local organizations responding to rising sea levels in Boston.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will also visit the Greentown Labs center in Somerville, Massachusetts, where local entrepreneurs are working on projects to combat climate change.

The crown prince and his wife will also address larger issues, using their star power to highlight the work of the Roca Inc. organization.

(Roca Inc.), which seeks to improve the lives of young people by addressing issues such as racism, poverty and incarceration.

They will also visit Harvard University's Center for Child Development, a leader in research on the long-term impact of early childhood experiences.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales will also meet Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and visit the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Museum with Caroline Kennedy, the late president's daughter.

"The Prince and Princess look forward to spending time in Boston and learning more about the issues affecting local people, as well as honoring the incredible climate solutions that will be highlighted through the Earthshot Award," said a statement issued by from Kensington Palace, their official residence.

Earthshot is offering 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) in prize money to winners in five separate categories: nature conservation, clean air, ocean regeneration, waste removal and climate change.

The winners and all 15 finalists also receive help to scale up their projects to meet global demand.

The winners will be announced on December 2 at the MGM Music Hall in Boston at a glamorous show featuring Billie Eilish, Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding.

The ceremony will also include a video narrated by naturalist David Attenborough and actress Cate Blanchett.  

The awards will be presented by actor Rami Malek, comedy star Catherine O'Hara and actress and activist Shailene Woodley.

The show will be hosted by the BBC's Clara Ampho and American actor and producer Daniel Day Kim.
