Rupnagar:

Three children died after being hit by a passenger train near Shri Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab's Rupnagar district on Sunday.

The police have also confirmed this incident.

The Punjab government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Giving information, the police said that the incident took place when four children of migrant laborers were playing near the railway track near the bridge over the Sutlej river.

The police also said that a fourth child was injured in the incident and has been admitted to the hospital.

Police said that the children are between seven and 11 years old.

Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains expressed grief over the incident and said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

My condolences are with the bereaved families.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh demanded compensation to the affected families.

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has also expressed grief over the incident.

Amrinder Singh Raja Wading, chief of the Punjab unit of the Congress, tweeted, "Shocked and distressed by the tragic death of three children who were run over by a train near Kiratpur Sahib today."
