The Vatican announced that the Pope was saddened by the death of a tramp who died in St. Peter's Square.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said that the homeless man (61-year-old German Burkhard Scheffler) had been living on the streets of Rome for years, and Vatican charities had helped him, BTA reported.

The Pope expressed regret that peace in Europe had been trampled

The rainy weather and cold in the Italian capital significantly worsened his condition and he was found dead near the colonnade of St. Peter's Square.

"The Pope remembers in his prayers Burckhard, as well as all those who are forced to live outside, without a home, in Rome and around the world, and calls on the faithful to join [his prayers]," Bruni said.
