Ukrainians are ready to endure the lack of light, water and heat for the sake of victory in the war with Russia and the prospect of membership in the European Union.

This statement was made by the wife of the President of Ukraine,

Olena Zelenska

, in an interview with the BBC.

"You know, we have had so many trials in these months, so many terrible trials, we have seen so many victims, so much destruction that, frankly,

a blackout is not the worst thing that can happen to us

. We are becoming resourceful, we are trying to do all the things, which is important to do with light. Then, when there is light, we do not put anything off for later," said the First Lady of Ukraine.

As Zelenska said, "literally last week, the social survey ended, Ukrainians were asked how much more they are willing to endure in such conditions, without light, without heat."

"And Ukrainians, in the majority,

more than 90% of the respondents, answered that they are ready to endure it for two or three years, if they see the prospect of our membership in the EU

. They want to be equal in this European family. We know why - for the sake of victory , for the sake of a sense of dignity, for the sake of the fact that this democratic family awaits us and we want to be in it on an equal footing with others. Ukrainians are ready to tolerate it. We are optimistic about these things," she emphasized.

At the same time, the wife of the head of state expressed hope that the war would not last too long:

"We all really hope that everything will end.

You know, it's easy to run a marathon when you know how many kilometers. Unfortunately, we don't know how many kilometers, we have to calculate our strength

. It's difficult. Sometimes it's very difficult, but then there are some new emotions that help us hold on."
