New Delhi:

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that Qatar has informed India that no invitation has been extended to controversial preacher and fugitive Zakir Naik to participate in the FIFA Football World Cup 2022.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters that Zakir Naik is an accused and declared proclaimed offender in the Indian legal system.

He said that as far as Zakir Naik's participation in the FIFA World Cup is concerned, the matter has been raised with Qatar.

He told that Qatar has informed us that the controversial preacher and fugitive Zakir Naik was not given any invitation to participate in the FIFA Football World Cup 2022.

It may be noted that Zakir Naik allegedly left India in 2016 and went to Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residence, after the Indian Anti-Terrorism Agency lodged an official complaint in 2016.

India has requested his extradition from Malaysia.

Bagchi said that the issue of his (Naik) extradition has also been raised from Malaysia so that he can be brought to justice in India.

He said that we will continue efforts in this direction.

The spokesman said that he (Naik) should be brought under our legal system and whatever steps should be taken in this direction, he is taking it. On this subject, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday that he was That India would convey its views on this matter to the concerned authorities (Qatar) in 'strong words'.
