In Indonesia, a six-year-old child has been pulled alive from the rubble by the relief and rescue team.

Jakarta:

271 people have died in a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Cianjur region of Indonesia.

Although a six-year-old child has been pulled out alive from the debris on Wednesday.

The child survived under the rubble for more than two days.

Relief and rescue teams launched operations after a powerful earthquake struck a populated area in Indonesia's West Java province, reports CNN. Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) said the rescue teams arrived in Cianjur Regency. Rescued Azka Maulana Malik in Nagrak village of Kugenang sub-district. 

The agency said the boy was found next to his grandmother's body.

Local media reported that Azka is now undergoing treatment at Cianjur Hospital.

The agency said rescuers had earlier retrieved the bodies of his parents. A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Cianjur region of West Java at around 1:21 p.m.

The buildings collapsed during school classes at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) local time on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

BNPB chief Major General Suharyanto said that the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 271.

He said that more than a third of those who died were children.

He said that around 2,043 people have been injured and 61,800 people have been displaced.

Forty people are still being reported missing.


56,000 houses were damaged


in the earthquake 56,320 houses were damaged due to the earthquake, out of which more than one third were badly damaged.

Other damaged buildings include 31 schools, 124 places of worship and three health facilities.

Suharyanto said the agency has built 14 refugee shelters with facilities for displaced people.

He said that the victims are expected to leave their temporary tents and move to these main shelters.

According to Suharyanto, the BNPB has deployed more than 6,000 rescue workers for the search and rescue operations, reports CNN.


Owners of damaged houses to receive compensation


While visiting earthquake-hit areas on Tuesday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the government would provide compensation of up to about USD 3,200 for owners of heavily damaged houses, reports CNN.

The houses will be rebuilt as earthquake resistant buildings. 


Devastation came in 2004.


In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck the island of Sumatra in northern Indonesia, affecting 14 countries, killing 226,000 people along the Indian Ocean coast, more than half of them in Indonesia.
