The Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works Yanis Karousos discussed with his Maltese counterpart Aaron Farrugia the cooperation in the field of air connectivity of the two island states, the Cypriot news agency KNA reported, BTA reported.

According to a statement from the Cypriot Ministry of Transport, the meeting discussed progress on the EU's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 in relation to air transport.

It is agreed that cooperation and coordination between the two countries will continue in order to preserve what has been achieved so far for the benefit of the island and peripheral states of the EU.

Both ministers have agreed that the aim is to achieve the best possible outcome in the negotiations currently taking place between the European Parliament, the EU Presidency and the European Commission.

The objective of Cyprus and Malta is in the legislative proposal to maintain the exemption provision for refueling aircraft for Cyprus and Malta for airports when the distance between them is less than 1,200 kilometers, providing 20 million free allowances for greenhouse gas emissions with an attempt to increase them to 60 million to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuels to cover the increase in costs compared to conventional fuels and in particular for Cyprus and Malta the provision to cover 100% of the price difference between sustainable aviation fuel and conventional fuel.
