On November 23, the Zaporizhzhia NPP lost access to external power supply and its operation is ensured by emergency diesel generators to obtain energy necessary for cooling the reactor and other important functions of nuclear safety.

This was stated by IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi with reference to representatives of the agency present at the station, "NV" writes.

Thus, IAEA experts informed that on November 23 at 15:30 the

NPP lost external power supply after a wave of Russian missile strikes

 in Ukraine.

At first, all 20 diesel generators at the facility began operating automatically, but now eight of them provide the plant with backup power needed for safety-related equipment.

At the same time, the other 12 generators are in reserve.

The IAEA recalled that nuclear

power plant reactors require electricity for cooling

and other important nuclear safety and protection functions, even when the reactors are shut down and not producing electricity.

And the agency also reported that the Rivne, South Ukrainian and Khmelnytsky NPPs are currently operating in the planned mode, without generation into the power system.

Grossi noted that the new incident at the ZANP underscores the increasingly dangerous and complex situation with nuclear safety and security at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

We will remind, earlier in "Energoatom" it was reported that due to Russian shelling and a decrease in frequency in the energy system in Ukraine, units at the Rivne, South Ukrainian and Khmelnytsky NPPs were disconnected from the energy system.
