"We believe there was only one shooter and that shooter is dead," he said.

He did not specify the cause of the suspect's death.

Authorities received the first call to police just after 10:00 p.m. last night, before the store closed.

News footage showed a large police force gathered at the scene.

Kosinski said police and investigators are carefully sweeping the store and maintaining security in the area.

The exact death toll is unclear, but Kosinski told reporters that police believe no more than 10 people were killed.

A spokesman for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the top trauma center in the area, told local TV station WAVY that they were treating five injured patients, Reuters reported.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, said in a statement early this morning that it was "shocked by this tragedy" and that the company was "in our prayers for the people affected, the community and our partners" and was "cooperating closely with law enforcement."

At least five people were killed and 25 injured in a shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on the night of the 19th.
