The Zaporo thermal power plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which originally provided about one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity. The Russian army occupied the power plant shortly after the invasion.

It was shelled again last weekend, and the International Atomic Energy Agency renewed its call for a protective zone around the plant to avoid a nuclear disaster.

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other for months of attacking the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, damaging buildings and cutting power lines vital to cooling the plant's six reactors from a nuclear meltdown, forcing the plant to Rely on backup generators to maintain operations.
