The European Parliament today adopted rules to further protect Europe's essential infrastructure.

The rules introduce minimum requirements for the assessment of threats to important facilities, as well as national strategies for their protection, an EP announcement states.

The rules introduce a general concept of "critical infrastructure" that will include energy, transportation, banking, financial market infrastructure, digital infrastructure, drinking and wastewater, food production, processing and delivery, health care, budget administration and space.

EU countries should introduce common possibilities to communicate with each other on matters of infrastructure protection.

The EP notes that the previous rules defined as "critical" only the infrastructure in energy and transport, BTA reported.
