Atanas Pekanov, an economist at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), in Vienna, took part today in the regular meeting of the General Affairs Council in the Cohesion format, which took place in Brussels.

European ministers responsible for cohesion policy held a strategic debate on the current state and future of cohesion policy as one of the most important for the EU.

For the purposes of the discussion, the Czech Presidency presented an analytical overview of the impact of the Cohesion Policy and its long-term effects on the European regions, the government press service announced.

"Cohesion policy is above all a long-term investment policy for growth, employment and balanced territorial development of the European Union and its regions," the Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister said in his speech.

He noted that the achievement of convergence is among the main ideas for the formation and existence of the European Union.

Cohesion policy faces a number of global challenges, which is why it is necessary that the future focus of the policy continues to be precisely on the main goals with which it was conceived, on the way to sustainable development and the implementation of green and digital transitions, Atanas Pekanov pointed out

Among the other highlights in his speech were the adaptation of cohesion policy to modern geopolitical realities, easing of procedures, which should not be at the expense of accountability and transparency. 

Deputy Prime Minister Pekanov emphasized that demographic problems are a serious challenge, threatening the successful implementation of the Cohesion Policy and leading to deepening of differences between regions in the EU, which requires special focus and attention.

The forum emphasized the need for important investment projects to go hand in hand with structural reforms to ensure that funds are used efficiently and transparently. 

The Council adopted Conclusions on the role of Cohesion Policy.

They provide a general assessment of its role in promoting regional development in the EU, as well as the main challenges to implementation and future actions.

In its conclusions, the Council recalls that the objective of social, economic and territorial cohesion is at the heart of the European project.

It also highlights the importance of protecting the EU's financial interests.

Atanas Pekanov is an economist at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), in Vienna, visited the headquarters of two of the most important European scientific institutes that work in the field of economics, European affairs, etc.

- Bruegel and the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

Pekanov spoke with their directors Jeromin Zettelmeyer and Cinzia Alcidi regarding the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plans, the EU's mechanisms to respond to crises, as well as the future of the Eurozone and the Economic and Monetary Union. 

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Pekanov also met with the General Director of the ECFIN General Directorate Maarten Vervej, with whom they discussed the recent proposals of the European Commission for the reform of the fiscal rules and the Pact for Stability and Growth, the process of discussing them in the coming months, as well as the implementation by side of the official government of the activities related to the technical preparation of Bulgaria for the adoption of the euro, in accordance with the decision of the National Assembly on the subject.
