On the last day of October in the American state of Tennessee, twins were born from embryos frozen more than 30 years ago

CNN writes about it.

Embryos were frozen on April 22, 1992.

They were stored in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -128C.

The embryos were originally created for an anonymous couple back in the 1990s, after which the couple donated the remaining embryos to the National Donor Center, hoping that one day another family would be able to use them.

Newborn twins Lydia Ann and Timothy Ronald Ridgway may have set a new record.

The previous record holder was Molly Gibson, who was born in 2020 from an embryo that had been frozen for almost 27 years.

Molly broke the record of her sister Emma, who was born from an embryo that had been frozen for 24 years.

Happy parents Philip and Rachel Ridgway have four other children, aged between two and eight, conceived naturally.

However, Philip and Rachel decided that they would "adopt" three donor embryos.

Two transplants were successful and twins were born.

"I was 5 years old when God gave Lydia and Timothy life, and he has been keeping that life ever since. In a way, they are our oldest children, even though they are the smallest," Ridgway said.

"Adoption" of embryos

The medical name for the process the Ridgways went through is embryo donation.

Genetically, twins may not even be related to their parents.

The use of donor embryos in the US does not fall under the category of traditional child adoption and is not regulated by law in any way.

"Applying the term 'adoption' to embryos is imprecise, misleading, and can be burdensome to recipients and should be avoided," explains the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Let us remind you that the first child "from a test tube" was born in 1978.

According to various estimates, until now, thanks to the use of the latest reproductive technologies, more than 10 million children have been born in the world.
