The German government has agreed to begin withdrawing its military contingent from Mali next summer, a government source quoted by Reuters said.

Spiegel magazine previously reported that the military would be withdrawn by May 2024.

Berlin has deployed about 1,000 of its troops in Mali, most of whom are based in the area of the northern city of Gao, where their main task is to carry out intelligence for the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA.

The future of the German mission has been in doubt for some time because of ongoing disagreements with the ruling military junta in Bamako and the arrival of Russian forces in Gao, which has heightened Berlin's anxiety over a growing Russian military presence in Mali.

In the middle of this month, Britain became the latest Western country to announce it was withdrawing its military from the African country.

London has 300 military personnel in MINUSMA.
