Mumbai:

The wedding reception of a newly married Hindu-Muslim couple has been canceled following protests by local organizations in Vasai city of Maharashtra in the wake of Shraddha Walkar's murder.

The police gave this information on Saturday.

Shraddha Walkar, 27, was murdered in Mehrauli in Delhi.

She was a resident of Vasai city of Palghar district.

A news channel editor tweeted a picture of the invitation to the reception on Friday morning and linked it to the Walker murder, using the hashtags 'lovejihad' and 'terrorist act'.

A local police officer told PTI that the wedding reception of the newly married Hindu-Muslim couple was to be held at an auditorium in Vasai West area on Sunday evening.

The police officer said that after the editor's tweet went viral, local Hindu and Muslim organizations in Vasai called up the owner of the hall and asked him to cancel the event for the sake of peace in the area.

Police said that the family members of the couple came to the Manikpur police station on Saturday and told that the reception has been postponed for the time being.

The 29-year-old woman is a Hindu while her husband is a Muslim and the two knew each other for the past 11 years, the official said.

Members of both the families have supported their relationship and the couple had an interfaith registered marriage in a court on 17 November.

Significantly, according to the police, Aftab Amin Poonawala had allegedly strangled his 'live-in partner' Shraddha Walkar (27) to death on the evening of May 18 and cut her body into 35 pieces.

The accused kept the body parts in a large refrigerator at his residence in South Delhi's Mehrauli for about three weeks and kept throwing them in different parts of the city for several days.
