31 years have passed since the helicopter with the political elite of Azerbaijan was shot down by the Armenian armed forces.



According to APA, the "MI-8" military helicopter was shot down by Armenians on November 20, 1991 over the village of Garakend, Khojavend region.

As a result of the shooting down of the helicopter, 22 Azerbaijani state figures, government representatives, deputies, journalists and crew members were killed.



Among those killed were State Secretary Tofig Ismayilov, Prosecutor General Ismat Gayibov, State Counselor, Minister of Internal Affairs Muhammad Asadov, MPs Vagif Jafarov, Vali Mammadov, Deputy Prime Minister Zulfu Hajiyev, Head of Department of the Presidential Office, journalist Osman Mirzayev, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan. Sanlal Serikov, Azerbaijan State Television journalist Ali Mustafayev were also present.



Previously, it was officially assumed that the helicopter fell into the fog and crashed into the rock.

However, a few days later, it was confirmed that the helicopter was shot down by Armenians.
