TWO PEOPLE have been sentenced to be hanged to death after being found guilty of intentionally killing Gervas Mgonja for alleged jealousy.

The defendants are Amidu Mbegu (40) and Amiry Chiwaka (28), both residents of Dar es Salaam.

The defendants were read the sentence by the Chief Resident Magistrate, Yusto Ruboroga in the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court.

Reading the details of the evidence, Ruboroga said that while in Zingiziwa Chanika areas, the defendants attacked Mgonja with knives and killed him and then threw his body into a six-foot hole that had been dug for firing bricks, 15 meters away from the area where they carried out the attack .

According to the evidence, on January 12, 2016, Mbegu met Chiwaka at 10:00 in the evening at the home of their friend known by the same name as Kijagi.

He told them that he has a quarrel with his girlfriend Ilima Simon because she has a romantic relationship with a man named Fundi and agreed to search for him.

They agreed to stab Fundi and when it came to 1:00 at night, on the same day, Mbegu went to Ilima's house and found him drinking local alcohol with Fundi and a customer, Gervas Mgonja, greeted them and sat at the door.

It was claimed in court that when Ilima saw Mbegu he asked him "have you come to bring me violence?"

Mbegu replied that he had followed alcohol at the club.

He claimed that after a short time he came to Chiwaka with two swords, when Fundi saw the swords he ran while being chased by his Mbegu friends who are Bojo and Kijagia.

However, they did not succeed in arresting him.

On the part of Mbegu, he chased Gervas Mgonja and managed to cut him down and ordered him to sit down and then Mbegu and Chiwaka joined forces and attacked him with knives and caused his death.
