Police in Spain seized more than 50 tons of marijuana - the largest amount of the drug ever seized in the country, Reuters reports.

Eight drug houses have been busted in the northeastern region of Catalonia and 20 people have been detained on suspicion of electricity fraud and crimes against public health, police said.

All the drug greenhouses were disguised as ostensibly legal hemp farms.

They were registered as the property of a commercial company and were located among other warehouses with legitimate industrial activity.

In total, 52 tons of marijuana were seized between June and October, with over 187,000 plants and 19 tons of buds.

In another arrest earlier this month, Spain announced it had seized 32 tons of marijuana, the previous record.

In June, the Spanish tax agency reported in connection with another anti-drug operation that cannabis was worth "between 2,300 and 2,500 euros per kilogram."

At these prices, 50 tons of the drug could have a total value of up to 125 million euros.
