Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract in general.

Another common disease that affects the digestive tract is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Fortunately, it is possible to improve the condition of your gut in case of CKD.

According to a new study, in the case of inflammatory bowel disease, foods containing a certain type of fiber should be added to the diet.

a study published in Gastroenterology

, scientists from the University of Manitoba and the University of Alberta analyzed the results of tests, including colon biopsies, of participants with CKD.

Their goal was to determine how different types of fiber might affect the human body with intestinal irritation.

The results showed that participants with this problem were unable to properly digest unfermented dietary β-fructan fibers.

What's more, unfermented dietary β-fructan fiber exacerbated the symptoms of CKD in participants by causing inflammation.

The results of this study can help in an individual approach to the diet.

The authors of the study call this "precise nutrition".

"For those with intestinal problems, it may be advisable to avoid those foods containing β-fructan fibers and determine whether avoidance improves symptoms," the experts said.

What foods contain β-fructan fibers

If you have intestinal problems, you are better off avoiding β-fructan fibers, i.e. certain foods that contain them:

  • grapefruits,

  • bananas,

  • dates,

  • prunes,

  • products from the onion family,

  • brussels sprouts,

  • asparagus,

  • beans and nuts

However, before eliminating these foods from your diet, consult with your family doctor or a nutritionist to make sure that this is the diet your body needs.
