Four Indian nationals, allegedly from Tanzania, have been arrested in the country with 53 kilos of gold ore.

It is alleged that the suspects were arrested on November 11, this year at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Mumbai.

The Indian Express newspaper has quoted the officers of the compound claiming that the suspects were found with gold in the weight of one kilogram each covered in several bags.

It is alleged that the suspects explained to the authorities that a Sudanese citizen whom they did not know, gave them the gold while they were changing planes at Doha Airport, Qatar and did not travel with them.

In addition, on the same day of November 11, CSMIA officers arrested three passengers including a woman who is about 70 years old, with eight kilos of gold and it is alleged that they arrived there from Dubai.

The officers claimed that the gold was hidden in the waist of the jeans worn by the suspects and they have been remanded for 14 days.

The Deputy Minister of Mines, Dr. Steven Kiruswa said that they are monitoring the information about the 53 kilos of gold ore claimed from Tanzania.

Dr. Kiruswa said that even the Ministry of Mines has heard the information but they are not sure if it is actually minerals from Tanzania, so they are following up to satisfy themselves of the truth of the information.

Earlier this month, customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport seized three passengers with gold worth US$369,000.

Recently, officials at the Thiruvananthapuram Airport in South India caught a passenger with one kilogram of gold from Dubai.

Last month, a passenger who arrived at the Kochi Airport from Dubai, was arrested trying to smuggle the gold he had put in towels covered in liquid gold and kept it as part of his luggage.
