The East African Community (EAC) has planned to speak with the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa about peace in the east of the country.

The EAC statement to the media explained that the General Secretary of the Society, Dr. Peter Mathuki is expected to join the facilitator of the peace process in eastern DRC, retired Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in the two-day work that started yesterday.

Advisors to the Chairman of the EAC Heads of State Meeting and the President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye have also been invited to the talks.

The DRC talks under the peace process led by the EAC have been reinvigorated to involve the leaders and all stakeholders of the community in finding a solution due to the fragile security situation in the country.

The meeting is held one week after the meeting of the heads of the EAC member states to hold a meeting on the peace process in the east of the DRC, in the city of Shamar El Sheikh in Egypt while the meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Strategy (COP27) continues.

The meeting chaired by President Ndayishimiye confirmed that all seven EAC member countries will participate fully in the process, with each head of state sending an advisor to assist the facilitator of the EAC peace process.

The heads of state from the Republic of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania emphasized their commitment to contribute to the Special Fund of the East African Community for the implementation of the peace process and called on all member countries to support the program sustainably.

Currently, the African Union and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) have contributed to the EAC Special Fund for the implementation of the peace process.

The EAC hopes to hold a Peace Conference by the end of this year, with one of the items on the agenda being to consider the possibility of aligning the peace process led by the EAC with the Luanda Process, which has additional powers and responsibilities.
