UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres

Antonio Guterres is a Portuguese politician.

Guterres, born in Lisbon on April 30, 1949, in a religious today stepped up pressure on G20 countries to work together to slow global warming, stressing that the fate of the planet will be decided by their actions or inaction, they said BTA and Reuters.

Guterres spoke on the Indonesian island of Bali ahead of the annual G20 summit.

We are on a highway that is leading us to climate hell, and we have hit the gas pedal, he said last week at the United Nations climate conference in Egypt.

Biden: The climate crisis is an existential threat

Guterres proposed a "Climate Solidarity Pact" that would oblige developed economies to make additional efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

According to him, rich countries should provide financial and technical assistance to accelerate the transition of developing economies to renewable energy sources.

G20 leaders can make or break the Climate Solidarity Pact.

Actions or inaction by the G20 will determine whether every member of our human family has the chance to live sustainably and peacefully on a healthy planet, he said.
