The Russian Navy tried to test the famous Poseidon nuclear torpedo, known as the "Weapon of the Apocalypse", but the test was not completed, probably due to "technical difficulties".

This was reported by CNN on Thursday, November 10, with reference to high-ranking US government officials.

The US government closely followed the military maneuvers of the Russian fleet in the Arctic Ocean.

Among the military vessels was the nuclear submarine K-329 "Belhorod", capable of carrying a nuclear torpedo "Poseidon", designed to launch from a distance of hundreds of kilometers and avoid coastal defenses by advancing underwater

According to CNN sources, the ships left the testing area in the Arctic Ocean last week and are heading back to port without firing any torpedoes.

In the US, it is believed that the test was hindered by technical difficulties.

"We can see this as part of a bigger picture and ongoing Russian military practice of sending poorly trained and underequipped troops into Ukraine," said an unnamed Western diplomat.

The Belgorod submarine was handed over to the Russian Navy at the beginning of July 2022 in the port of Severodvinsk.

Military experts say its design is a modified version of Russia's Oscar II-class guided missile submarines.

"Belhorod" has a length of more than 184 meters, which makes it the longest submarine in the ocean today.

This feature allows it to carry the Poseidon nuclear torpedo.

At the beginning of October, the Russian nuclear submarine K-329 "Belgorod" "disappeared" from its base and was involved in maneuvers in the Arctic Ocean, apparently to test the new nuclear torpedo "Poseidon" in the Kara Sea, north of Siberia. which received the name "Weapons of the Apocalypse".

The Russians may try to conduct another torpedo test.

But soon the water in the test area will begin to freeze, so the time window when this can be done is narrowing, the sources said.

The torpedo test is likely to further strain US-Russian relations.

It will be recalled that in a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs demonstrated that "you don't need to attack big cities in order to win."
