The United States of America assesses the recent events surrounding relations between Kosovo and Serbia as disturbing and putting at risk the important progress achieved in the EU-facilitated dialogue (between the two countries), KosovaPress reported, citing a spokesperson for the US Embassy in Pristina.

The United States joins the EU in calling on representatives of Serbia and the Kosovo Serbs to honor their commitments to dialogue and return to Kosovo's institutions.

In his words, "the withdrawal of the Kosovo Serbs from the institutions of Kosovo is not a solution to the current disputes and has the potential to further escalate tensions on the ground."

The US spokesman in Pristina also announced that for the US, both countries are responsible for ensuring peace and stability at the local level.

He emphasized that the US is again insisting on postponing the implementation of the license plate decision and on starting negotiations to form a union of municipalities with a Serbian majority (Union of Serbian Municipalities /SSO/).

He also urged Kosovo and Serbia to choose the path of dialogue and refrain from actions that lead to violence and confrontation, stressing that the United States fully supports the EU's efforts to continue facilitating negotiations.

The spokesperson of the American embassy pointed out that both Kosovo and Serbia must show that they are ready to seek solutions in a constructive way and respect their commitments made in the EU-assisted dialogue, BTA informs.

"Actions such as burning cars or intimidating rhetoric are unacceptable and will provoke an appropriate response from the international community... All concerned must take steps to reduce tensions and ensure peace and stability at the local level."

Actions and rhetoric that increase the possibility of violence put the lives of innocent people and those of international peacekeepers on the ground at unnecessary risk,” he said.
