The environment ministry is preparing the ground for burning garbage to generate electricity, with sources indicating that the public energy corporation is showing significant interest in such a scheme, particularly at its plant in Lavrion, southeast Attica.

Given the interest of Greece's NEK - PPC and other market players, the ministry believes it will not need to build the necessary plants and the scheme will help it achieve its goal of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by less than 10% of the total amount.

"We will proceed with construction in cooperation with the private sector only if the market does not cope," Waste Management Secretary-General Manolis Grafakos told a conference on Wednesday.

However, given that the proportion of recyclables recovered from the country's sorting facilities is below 15%, the waste that will enter the new facilities will inevitably be mixed and include materials such as plastic.
