What are the means of lighting without electricity

Candles

The market offers a large number of types of candles of different price categories.

The most important characteristic of a candle is its burning time.

Wax candles are considered the best, stearin candles are slightly worse, but also good.

Paraffin candles are cheap, but they burn out very quickly, while wax and stearin candles burn longer, but also cost more.

This simple and affordable method of lighting has its disadvantages.

Firstly, candles are very fire-hazardous, because they use an open flame for lighting, secondly, an open flame quickly burns out the oxygen in the room, so if you light a large number of candles, you will quickly become hot and stuffy.

Garlands, candles and other battery-powered lighting devices

When choosing such devices, the main thing to pay attention to is the type of batteries.

It is better to give preference to models designed for AA and AAA - these are the most common and cheapest batteries, other batteries are usually less available.

Oil lamp

Various lamps that work on the basis of burning oil are called oil lamps.

Our ancestors called such a lamp a "muzzle" and used tallow, the rendered fat of cattle, for burning.

The principle of operation of an oil lamp is similar to the principle of operation of a kerosene lamp.

It is quite easy to make it - oil is poured into the capacity, the wick is lowered there.

The wick is a rope made of vegetable or artificial fibers that is impregnated with oil.

The other end of the wick, fixed above the oil, is ignited, and the oil, rising up the wick, burns.

This means of lighting is also considered a fire hazard, especially if such a lamp does not have a lampshade that protects against open flames.

The cost of oil lamps starts from a hundred hryvnias and can reach several thousand, if the lamp is made of bronze or brass, is decorative or ancient

LED lamps on batteries or solar batteries

Solid-state light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are a type of lighting that uses semiconductor LEDs, organic LEDs, or polymer LEDs as the light source, rather than filaments, plasma, or gas.

Due to low energy consumption, LEDs are used in lamps, spotlights, lamps, decorative lighting, and the absolute majority of modern hand flashlights use exactly this type of lighting elements.

LED lamps are a safer type of lighting.

In conditions of lack of energy consumption, of course, you need to focus on

In

a lamp powered by a solar battery

, the latter serves as a battery that accumulates solar energy during the day and releases it at night in the form of an electric current.

In addition, the current from the solar battery is enough to charge smartphones, smart watches and other devices.

In order to get an autonomous light source on a solar battery, you will need: an LED lamp with a built-in battery and a USB connector, a USB cable and a solar battery with a mount.

LED lamps with built-in batteries

look like ordinary light bulbs, but inside their housing is a lithium-ion battery.

Such lamps do not heat up at all, and their charge is enough for up to 5 hours of operation.

In order for such a lamp to work without electricity in conditions of fan outages, you need to turn on a chandelier or lamp with such a light bulb in advance.

It is saturated with energy, and when the electricity supply disappears, thanks to the accumulated energy, it will continue to shine.

The cost of a lamp on a solar battery is from 100 to 700 UAH, an LED lamp with a built-in battery costs from 200 to 500 UAH.

Self-powered tourist lights

A variety of travel lights such as flashlights, camping lights, solar powered flashlights, dynamo lights, and headlamps come in handy in the event of a power outage.

Most travel flashlights can be powered by both batteries and batteries in the usual AA or AAA format, and there are solar-powered flashlights.

Usually, the charge of the flashlight on the battery is enough for 2 hours of operation at full power.

The charge of the lantern on the solar battery is enough to work for 6 hours.

Dynamo lights have a handle, turning which you charge the built-in battery.

Some of the travel lights with built-in batteries have USB connectors and can work in power bank mode to charge your gadgets.

On average, you can focus on the following prices for autonomous lamps:

  • pocket tourist flashlight: from UAH 200,

  • manual dynamo flashlight: from UAH 200,

  • headlamp: from UAH 400,

  • camping lantern: from 450 to 1000 hryvnias,

  • hand-held tourist lantern: from UAH 600,

  • portable rechargeable lantern: from UAH 800,

  • camping dynamo-light: from UAH 2,500.
