Ghana will assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council on November 1, a historic moment in the country's two-year term as a non-permanent member of the council, BTA reported.

The UN Security Council is the primary body for maintaining and promoting international peace and security.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration outlined in a press release also received by the GNA some of the events scheduled for November under the Ghanaian presidency.

On Tuesday at 16:30, Mr. Harold Agyeman, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, will give a media briefing.

On the same day at 19:00, he will also brief the member countries of the United Nations on Ghana's program and priorities for the month.

On Thursday, November 3, there will be an Open Ministerial Discussion which will be chaired by Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana.

It will be themed “Integrating Effective Resilience Building into Peacekeeping Operations to Create Lasting Peace” and will be held from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the meeting room of United Nations Security Council.

Next Thursday, November 10, from 14:00 to 17:00, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will chair a Heads of State debate on “Countering Terrorism in Africa: An Imperative for Peace, Security and Development”.

In her capacity as President of the UN Security Council, Ghana will focus on strengthening international peace and security for the sake of achieving sustainable and inclusive development, especially on the African continent.

This will be made possible by fully addressing the root causes and preconditions of conflicts in Africa related to the growing number of young people, poverty, climate change and the lack of sustainable institutions.

Ghana rejoined the UN Security Council on 1 January 2022.

This is the third time that Ghana has held the seat of a non-permanent member.

The first time Ghana was given the opportunity to become part of the council was in 1962 - 1963 and then again from January 2006 to December 2007.
