On Tuesday evening, October 25, a powerful

earthquake

shook a large part of the northern Philippines, as a result of which at least 36 people were injured, the international airport was closed, and some patients were evacuated from a local hospital.

ABC News writes about it.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that an earthquake was recorded in the Philippines.

Its magnitude was 6.4, and its center was located 9 km northwest of Lagayan City in Abra Province at a depth of 11 km.

Tremors were felt even more than 400 km from the epicenter of the earthquake.

As a result of the natural disaster, 10 people were injured in Abra province and at least 26 in Ilocos Norte province. The international airport in Ilocos Norte was also damaged and closed.

Some domestic flights were also cancelled.

In the city of Batak, some patients were evacuated from the local hospital.

This happened after part of the ceiling in the intensive care unit collapsed due to the earthquake.

The city also temporarily suspended school work while engineers assess the extent of damage to the buildings.

A century-old church was also damaged in Abra province.

Its bell towers collapsed.

The Philippine archipelago lies on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a region along much of the Pacific coast that is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, making the Southeast Asian country one of the most disaster-prone in the world.

It will be recalled that

a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in Indonesia.
