Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama arrived in Israel on Sunday for an official visit that will include meetings with Israeli cyber defense officials, the Associated Press reported, citing the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Rama's three-day visit comes a month after Albania cut diplomatic ties with Iran over a July cyber attack that targeted Albanian government websites and services.

After Albania severed diplomatic relations with Iran, a second cyberattack, from the same Iranian source, affected an information system that records entries and exits at the Albanian border, causing delays for travelers.

Israel and Iran are age-old rivals and have been waging a shadowy war in the region and in cyberspace for more than a decade, the AP recalls.

Rama met Israel's acting Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Sunday, whose office said the two discussed bilateral ties and "overcoming common challenges facing both countries, with an emphasis on the Iranian threat."

Rama and Lapid also discussed cooperation in the field of cyber defense.

"Israel will provide as much assistance as possible in the effort against Iran.

We perceive this as a national interest and a historical obligation," said Yair Lapid.

The Foreign Ministry said Rama will meet with the head of Israel's National Cyber Directorate, the country's main cybersecurity authority.

The Albanian Prime Minister will also have meetings with the President of Israel Yitzhak Herzog and other officials, notes BTA.
