Sonia Gandhi had said on Monday, 'I was waiting for this day for a long time.'

New Delhi:

Sonia Gandhi, who was the interim president of the Congress for three years, is now handing over the responsibility of the chief post to Mallikarjun Kharge after the party's internal elections are over.

Party sources have told NDTV that, "She will continue to be the President of the Congress Parliamentary Party."

Sonia Gandhi was elected as the President of the Congress Parliamentary Party in June 2019.

As the chairperson of the parliamentary party, Sonia Gandhi will decide who will replace Mallikarjun Kharge as the party's leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Mallikarjun Kharge had to step down from the post of the Upper House due to the party's "one man, one post" rule on getting the top post.

A senior party leader said, "Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party in August 2019 after the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, has so far used only the post 'President, Congress Parliamentary Party' in all her formal communication."

He said that even in his letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he has never nominated himself as the Congress President.

Sonia Gandhi is now being seen in the role of an advisor with the Gandhi family loyalist Mallikarjun Kharge, considered a supported candidate, becoming the president.

Kharge had also insisted to reporters that he would seek the help of the Gandhi family if needed and there was no shame in that.

At the same time today Rahul Gandhi also said that he will report to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

"You have to ask Kharge ji and Sonia ji, the Speaker will decide what my role will be and where to use me," he told reporters.

Sonia Gandhi, 75, withdrew from the party's internal affairs in December 2017 after handing over the charge to Rahul Gandhi, but was forced to take up the responsibility of party president again in August 2019 following the general election defeat and requests from party leaders.

At that time, Congress leaders had said that the leader who led the UPA to two consecutive victories, would revitalize the parties.

However, the party's decline did not stop even after Sonia Gandhi became the interim president, and the Congress lost elections in several states in the last three years.

As a result, voices began to rise for change.

Big leaders also supported it, there was even open revolt.

As happened recently in Rajasthan by the loyalists of Ashok Gehlot regarding the post of Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

After casting her vote for the internal elections, Sonia Gandhi had said, "I have been waiting for this day for a long time."

Today she also went to Mallikarjun Kharge's house to congratulate him on his victory.
