German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has asked the economy, finance and environment ministers to create a legal basis for extending the lives of three nuclear plants until at least April 15, 2023, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

Germany had planned to completely abandon nuclear power by the end of the year, but the collapse of energy supplies from Russia due to the war in Ukraine forced the government to keep two plants as an emergency reserve, writes BTA.

It also emerged that the Emsland plant would be shut down for two weeks in mid-winter before January to reconfigure its nuclear fuel so it could continue operating until April 15, according to draft legislation seen by Reuters.
