Two Chinese warships and 11 fighter jets were spotted around Taiwan.

This was announced by the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense, quoted by TASS.

The agency claimed that a J-11 aircraft and a Su-30 aircraft flew "in the eastern part of the middle line of the Taiwan Strait".

Taiwan's military was monitoring the situation and responding to these activities with combat air patrol, warships and anti-aircraft missile systems, the ministry added.

Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which claims the democratically-ruled island is part of its territory and must be taken over - by force if necessary.

In 2005, Beijing passed a law giving the country the legal basis to take military action against the island if it secedes or intends to do so.

However, Taiwan rejects China's claims and emphasizes that only the island's residents can decide their future.

Taiwan: Meeting China on the battlefield is not an option

Tensions between Beijing and Taipei have risen since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island in August.

To show its anger, China staged military exercises around Taiwan that included missile launches and moves to place the island under a blockade.

Since then, China has continued its military operations, albeit on a smaller scale.

This has focused the attention of Taiwan and its friendly countries, such as the United States and Japan, on how any conflict with China might play out and how Taiwan and its allies might respond.

Taipei has already warned that a Chinese blockade of Taiwan or the seizure of an offshore island would be considered an act of war.
