Gladkov wrote in Telegram that air defenses shot down missiles near Novi Oskol, a town of about 18,000 people located 96 km from the border with Ukraine.

"Power lines are damaged. Trains are temporarily stopped," the governor announced, adding that there were no casualties.

Reuters has not yet been able to independently confirm the message, and there is still no reaction from Kyiv.

Yesterday, Gladkov accused Ukraine of shelling an apartment block in the city of Belgorod, the administrative center of the region.

Isolated cases of explosions in Russian border areas have been reported periodically since Russia's February 24 invasion of Ukraine, usually involving fuel or ammunition depots.

Kyiv has not claimed responsibility, but its representative once described previous similar incidents as retaliation for Moscow's military actions against Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the war, Russia has called its actions in Ukraine a "special operation".
