The ambassadors of the EU member states agreed on a mandate for negotiations with the European Parliament on a decision not to accept Russian travel documents issued in Ukraine and Georgia, BNR reports.

Russian travel documents issued in Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine or breakaway territories in Georgia will not be accepted as valid for obtaining a visa or crossing the borders of the Schengen area.

Russia stops issuing passports to mobilized citizens

The decision is in response to military aggression against Ukraine and Russia's practice of issuing Russian international passports to residents of occupied regions.

It also follows Russia's unilateral decision to recognize the independence of the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008.
