At least 76 people were killed when a boat capsized during a flood in the Anambra state of Nigeria.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed this on Sunday.

It is being told that it was overloaded due to which this accident happened.

The President's Office said, "A boat carrying 85 people capsized after floods in the state's Ogbaru area, killing 76 people. The President has directed emergency services to provide relief to the victims."

"I pray for the souls of the victims in peace and for the safety of all as well as the well being of the family members of the victims of the accident," the President said.

On Sunday, the emergency services team said that the rise in water level was hampering the rescue work.

"The water level is too high and too risky for a smooth search and rescue operation," National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) southeast coordinator Thikman Tanimu told AFP news agency.

NEMA requested the Nigerian Air Force to provide helicopters for the rescue operation.

Anambra state governor Charles Soludo urged residents of the flood-affected areas to move to safer places.

"This flood is a blow to the government and the good people of Anambra state. I sympathize with the families of those involved," Soludo said in a statement.

Let us tell you that since the start of the rainy season, many areas of more than 200 million people of the West African nation have been devastated by floods.

According to emergency services, more than 300 people have died and at least a million have been left homeless.
