Listen to the news

There is no data to confirm the connection between the presence of American helicopters and a ship in the Baltic Sea and the leaks from "Nord Stream" 1 and 2. The suggestions that the American President Joe Biden has promised to attack a gas pipeline are false, according to a check by Factcheck.bg.

Here are the facts.

Three leaks were reported on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea on 26 and 27 September.

A fourth one is also reported, but without explicitly mentioning its coordinates.

Representatives of the EU and the US described what happened as an undoubted sabotage, but without specifying who they believe was responsible for it.

However, political figures from the Russian Federation directly blame the US for the pipeline leaks.

Russia: There is evidence that the West was involved in the sabotage of the Nord Stream

The version of US "intervention" is most often argued with two statements that are actively spreading in Bulgaria as well: according to the first, an American helicopter and a warship were in the area of the accident, and according to the second, American President Joe Biden stated that will destroy the pipeline.

That both statements are part of the Kremlin's propaganda is clear from the fact that they were used as arguments by Russian representatives in the UN Security Council during a special meeting on the subject.

Was there US military equipment in the breach area?

According to the post sent by a reader, a US helicopter flew over the Baltic Sea on September 2nd, and two days before the pipeline accident, the USS KEARSARGE was in the area.

The military helicopter flight has the call sign FFAB123.

A check on Factcheck.bg through the flight tracking system Flightaware shows that such a flight actually took place on September 2 over the Baltic Sea between 08:57 a.m. and 11:52 a.m. Bulgarian time.

Putin: Sabotage against the Nord Stream gas pipelines is an "act of international terrorism"

However, at no point did the path of flight FFAB123 intersect with the location of the leaks from the two pipeline pipes.

This is proven by a map prepared for the case by "Deutsche Welle".

The facts do not support the claim that this flight had anything to do with the September 26 and 27 Nord Stream leaks.
