A worker at a Spanish poultry farm has been infected with bird flu.

According to the Ministry of Health, this is the first case of an infected person in Spain and the second in Europe, reports BNR.

The infection occurred in the province of Guadalajara, where an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu was confirmed on September 17.

The worker was isolated for 11 days until the test showed that he was already negative.

He had no symptoms and did not need to be hospitalized, although health officials say bird flu can be fatal.

His colleagues are not infected.

Human-to-human transmission is very difficult, and according to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that it can also occur through heat-treated food.

However, surveillance of bird flu outbreaks is recommended.

Bird flu cases are increasing in Albania

In just one year in Spain, 36 outbreaks were found in farms and 79 among wild birds, where the infection most likely came after contact with animals in poultry farms, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food reported.

The latest, discovered in Huelva in August, killed 37,000 broilers.
