The trend of population decline continues for the fourth consecutive census.

Trends in demographics are usually long-term.

This was stated by the chairman of the National Statistical Institute, Prof. Dr. Atanas Atanasov, on bTV.

"It is a pure coincidence that we announced the results of the census on October 3, and the elections were on October 2," said Atanasov.

"Since we have a low birth rate and migration of young people abroad, aging occurs.

Nearly 200 settlements do not have a single inhabitant - they are absolutely depopulated, but they still have the status of settlements", he added.

One third of the population is concentrated in the six largest cities, i.e.

concentration exists: “We have areas where the population is declining faster than others – e.g.

Vidin region, as a quarter of the population of this region has disappeared.”

He stated that the population census is a series of studies - it always lasts for several years, including multiple stages: preparation, information gathering, trial and actual census, additional studies such as reproductive attitudes, control studies, etc.

NSI revealed how much Bulgaria has decreased.

The population of our country is 6,519,789 people
