An American was sentenced today to four and a half years in prison in Russia for violence against a police officer, France Press reported, citing the Russian Investigative Committee.

Robert Gilman "was found guilty of a charge of using violence against law enforcement," the statement said.

According to investigators, the 28-year-old American, while intoxicated, kicked a shift officer several times in a train car on January 17, 2022, before being restrained by several law enforcement officers.

Three days later he was detained.

Gilman said today that he was a "victim of political repression" after the sentence was handed down by a court in the southwestern Russian city of Voronezh, RIA Novosti reported, cited by BTA.
