Ovsyannikova, 44, was placed under house arrest for two months in August and could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of spreading fake news about the Russian armed forces.

The case is related to a protest in July when she stood on the riverbank opposite the Kremlin and held up a placard that said President Vladimir Putin was a murderer and that his soldiers were fascists.

On Saturday, Russian media RT reported that Ovsyannikova was missing.

"Last night, my ex-wife left the place where the court ordered her to be detained under house arrest and, together with my 11-year-old daughter, ran away in an unknown direction," said Ovsyannikova's ex-husband.

On March 4, eight days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Russia passed a law against the dissemination of information that discredits the armed forces.

Ovsyannikova, who was born in Ukraine, gained international notoriety in March when she appeared before cameras in a television studio during the evening news of Russia's First Channel with a placard reading "Stop the war" and "They are lying to you," Reuters recalled.

She had already been fined for two other protests against the war.
