The liberal-conservative ruling New Unity party of Prime Minister Kristianis Karins won Latvia's parliamentary elections held yesterday, world news agencies reported, citing data from the Central Election Commission based on 95 percent of ballots cast.

The party received 18.9 percent, BTA informed.

The opposition party Union "Greens and Farmers" receives 12.8 percent, and in third place is the newly formed union "National List", which receives 11 percent.

Of Karinsh's previous coalition partners in the government, only one - the national conservative party "National Union" - now also enters the parliament with 9.3 percent.

The rest have failed to pass the 5 percent barrier to entry into the legislature.

The biggest loser in the elections is also considered to be the opposition social democratic party "Concord", whose solid electorate comes mainly from the Russian minority in the country.

The party always fielded MPs in previous elections, but now gets just 4.8 percent.
